Opening Day- 2009. I think it was one to write home about.
After getting out the snow reports, I took our Flip camera and jumped on the Gondola. The first run of the season I never buckle my boots. I don’t know why? I guess it goes back to my ski racing days (which are l-o-n-g gone by the way). It’s a way to get your balance back. Saw some fun faces- like Dick Sterry- working the top of the Gondola. Then I went for it- Exodus, Upper Picked, Grand Junction, Link, cruised by East Basin, and right over to North Peak Quad, where the guys from the Terrain Park were waiting for me. There was a definite chill in the air, but it was a good chill. The kind that made me think, “Yes, now this is what I’m talking about.” We cruised down Sunset, over to “The Claw” and down Brookway. Then, back up the spiral staircase for me. :(
Our snowmakers and groomers did an amazing job this past week. The coverage is wall to wall, and we are still cranking out the snow and will continue to open more terrain over the weekend and right through next week. Good things came to those who waited!! And wouldn’t you know, as I type this, it’s snowing out again.
Everyone has their own first day rituals, so I won’t go on and on about mine. I will leave you with this: I actually did write home--I sent my dad a quick email that said, “Thanks again for teaching me to ski…”
