Loon Mountain Community

A network for skiers & riders passionate about snow sports

Normally associated with the winter months when folks in the north don’t leave the house for days or weeks on end because it’s too cold, or it’s too snowy; simply put, “the weather is too bad to go outside so I just stay in the house all day long and wait for Spring.” That’s pretty much how this summer went for many of us. May to September, we experienced cabin fever, and it was worse than a summertime cold! It was cool and rainy more than it was warm and dry, and picnics, swimming and other summer activities were put on hold or simply cancelled. Many of us couldn’t wait for autumn and then winter to arrive. Let the cool turn to cold and the rain turn to snow and we’ll be able to get back outside and enjoy what nature provides. In this case, skiing and riding.

It took a little longer than we hoped for. October brought the first snowfall of the season and we thought ”this is going to be a great winter.” Then Mother Nature showed us who was in charge and she decided, almost immediately, to let the snow melt and then allowed the cool (not cold) temperatures to continue for several weeks longer than we are used to. Great for saving on heating expenses, but horrible if you can’t wait to get back on the mountain! Thankfully, it looks like that’s all in the past now and we’re rapidly moving towards the kind of winter we’ve been longing for. The cold is back, snow is falling and our winter activity dreams are finally being realized. Let’s enjoy the season and take advantage of what living in the north country offers. Get out and ski, ride, snowshoe, skate, or whatever you prefer. Winter and it’s unique opportunities really doesn’t last that long. Spring, the bugs and the rain will be here soon enough.
