Hi- Our trail crew has been working on cutting the two trails b/n Rip Saw and Boom Run all summer. They will not be opening for this season, as there are some pretty steep pitches, and we are required to finish all trail work by mid-September. Once…

Hi Robert- We are planning to open on Saturday, November 21, weather permitting. The snowmakers were out today testing the lines. We will most-likely stick with our usual opening plan of having advanced terrain open from the Gondola down to Camp II…

Our Hot Dog Festival is coming up this Saturday, July 25. It's when we pay homage to America's favorite summer diet buster- the hot dog. This year, we're getting all Emeril and kicking things up a notch with our Table of Terrific Toppings. If it's m…

One to Write Home About

Opening Day- 2009. I think it was one to write home about.

After getting out the snow reports, I took our Flip camera and jumped on the Gondola. The first run of the season I never buckle my boots. I don’t know why? I guess it goes back to my ski racing days (which are l-o-n-g gone by the way). It’s a way to get your balance back. Saw some fun faces- like Dick Sterry- working the top of the Gondola. Then I went for it- Exodus, Upper Picked, Grand Junction, Link, cruised by East Basin, an… Continue

Getting Ready...

I’m sitting here at my desk looking out the window at it r- ra- rai- rain… There, I said, the dreaded 4-letter word. I’m here at work on this Saturday, trying to get some things done as we have a busy week ahead: Bud the snow reporter comes back to work Monday, lift evacuation training is Tuesday, media party at the Boston Globe is Thursday, and the Boston Ski and Snowboard Expo starts Thursday and goes through Sunday at the Bayside Expo. All these things really mean that winter is coming upon u… Continue

Trail Rides and Bucket Lists...

It is one year ago exactly I found myself in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho, preparing to cross off #6 on my Bucket List: I was bringing my grandparents ashes to the top of the 10,500-ft. Eagles Perch, to put them with their son’s ashes (my uncle Peter’s). As I was literally 100 feet away from the trail head to start my journey that morning, the US Forest Service came in and shut down all the canyons and trails within a three-mile radius, due to a rather large forest fire that unfortunately las… Continue

We're in full swing at Loon

If it was winter, I would be doing back flips with the amount of early-season precipitation we’ve received so far. However, I have to concede that it’s been a slow start to the summer because of the rain. Even though I’m a die-hard New Englander, and understand the saying, “If you don’t like the weather, stick around…” But seriously- it was starting to get depressing. The good news is that the weather pattern seems to be behind us now, and sunny skies are in the forecast.

I had the opportunity… Continue

Horseback Riding returns to Loon for the summer.

I can’t believe there are only 10 more days until June 21. Not only is it my grandpa Ed’s 86th birthday, but also it’s the longest day of the year. The summer solstice! Plus it’s another indicator that our summer adventures will be starting up shortly! Opening Day is Saturday, June 27.

Two big items to mention in this blog:

We will once again have horseback riding . Kara and her crew are bringing over the horses next week to get them familiar with our stable area and the t… Continue

Forecast: Continued mixed precip Monday, gradually ending in the afternoon. Windy with temps in the 30s.
Comments: Keep doing doing your snow dance, please. Some predictions are that we could see 4-7 inches of snow in the base areas and 20-30 inches above 2000 feet! Add those accumulations to our current base depths and the post-storm skiing and riding will be epic! The plan is for all 49 trails, five glades and both half-pipes to be open tomorrow. Terrain Park Rangers will be re-working all five parks and hope to get some open by afternoon. The sun returns early in the week, along with temperatures in the upper 40s, just in time for Wednesday's "Luck of the Irish" race. Saturday is the Governor's Cup and next Sunday is the Cardboard Box race. A lot happening over the last half of the month and we hope you're able to join us for the fun. Have a good one! -Bud
