Hi Sarah!
Great to hear you are headed up this December with your Golden Retriever! My Golden Retriever, Molly, really enjoys hiking up Brookway in the summer to Camp III so she can run around in the sun! I would strongly encourage you and your pup to take the gondola to the summit in the summer and hike down, just make sure you have booties for the pup- Molly's paws took a beating from the rocks on the work road and from exploring the other trails, but I know she thinks it is all worth it! Goldens are such great pups- she is my first (I had a Newfie/Chow/Lab mix before- she was a fan of sleeping and taking leisurely strolls on the XC trails at Loon, nothing more), and she LOVES Loon! I haven't taken her snowshoeing on the Mountain in the winter, but I'm sure one day she will drag me out soon! She's definitely a snow dog- I actually just purchased ski jouring equipment for her, we are going to give that a try this season on XC trails and on the frozen area lakes! Please let me know if I can help in any way with your trip in December- I know you will love it at Loon! I grew up 25 minutes south of Loon and skied Loon more times than I could ever count! I hope all is well! Happy Thanksgiving! Abby

Hi Sarah, and welcome to the Loon community site. We're glad to hear you are planning a trip to Loon this winter and I hope the Farmers Almanac about that forecast! Thanks to Kimberley for giving you some good info below on the terrain here at Loon. You can also check out our interactive map on the website - it will show you the trails by difficulty rating, as well as the on-mountain facilities. And stay tuned for our new interactive base area map - coming soon! If you have never been to the area before (and even if you have), you need a copy of the new Loon Magazine - it has some great info about the variety of terrain here at Loon and places to eat with kids. You can see a copy of this on the home page of our website and you can easily look at and print any pages that you want to have for reference. Or, if you want to send me a note with your mailing address, I would be happy to send you a copy. If you have any specific questions as you do your planning, let us know and we'll get you the answers and info you need. Thanks again and think snow....soon, but not quite yet!

Hi Sarah! Loon is a great mountain; I had the priviledge of working there in the 07/08 season for about 4 months and got to ski pretty much every day :) The ski instructors are fantastic and offer instruction for all levels from beginner to advanced. Start with the Kancamagus Quad and work your way through all the blue trails - then head over to North Peak for some awesome black runs at the top of the mountain. The lower part of Loon Peak also has some cool faster runs. Finally - take the Tote Road Quad over to South Peak - take one of the blue runs down to the lodge and have a delicious sandwich at the bottom :) If you're into trees - there are a number of cool trails on Loon Peak as well as a really difficult double black on South Peak. For the kids/beginners - hit Snubber for some fun or the handle tow for a ride up the hill :) best for all is to take the Gondola to the top of Loon Peak and enjoy a leisurely run down Bear Claw - it's one of the longest green runs in the North East :) the ice-rink is pretty small - they do hire skates out and it's fun for half an out or so! ENJOY LOON! it's a blast :) if you'd like any more info just let me know! x

Hi all! I'm heading up to Loon in early December. I'll have quite a diverse group of skiers. Nephew 5 years (beginner) to adult pretty experienced in the NE region only. Any suggestions would be helpful including ideas on where to eat. I'm planning to bring skis, snowshoes and ice skates - oh and yak traks of course :) The Farmers Almanac is calling for some serious snow this year. I hope it comes early!

Loon Mountain Current Conditions - March 16, 2010

Lifts Open: 10
Trails Open: 52
Miles Open: 25
Acres Open: 320
Superpipe Open: True
Minipipe Open: True
Surface Conditions: variable conditions
New Snow (last 24 hours): 0"
Temperature °F: 57°F
Today's Weather: Clear overnight with temps in the 20s.
Forecast: Sunny and mild again Wednesday, temps in the low 50s.
Comments: We're witnessing a sure sign of Spring; skiers and riders in shirt sleeves and cut-offs, an obvious result of the very mild temperatures and bountiful sunshine we're being blessed with. After a below freezing night, the trails start off the morning relativley firm and then soften up quickly once the sun hits them, so get here early and enjoy the entire spectrum of Spring skiing and riding. Mid-week lift lines are usually a lot shorter than the weekends, so the opportunity to ski and ride until you wear yourself out is there for the taking. Great weather, great conditions and lots of terrain to chose from; don't miss it. The Luck of the Irish race is tomorrow and promises to be an outstanding event. Have a good one! -Bud
