Cabin Fever

Normally associated with the winter months when folks in the north don’t leave the house for days or weeks on end because it’s too cold, or it’s too snowy; simply put, “the weather is too bad to go outside so I just stay in the house all day long and wait for Spring.” That’s pretty much how this summer went for many of us. May to September, we experienced cabin fever, and it was worse than a summertime cold! It was cool and rainy more than it was warm and dry, and picnics, swimming and other sum… Continue

Reflections

Yesterday, or only a day or two ago, so it seems, I was walking on bare ground across the lower portion of the Seven Brothers trail and the Loon Mountain park so I could get some photos of snowmaking underway on Lower Picked Rock. The ground was pretty much bare except where our snowmaking crews had been working. Still, the plan was to open for the season on November 22nd. Wouldn’t you know it, the night before the season opener, Mother Nature kicks in with two inches of snow, we’ve got eight tr… Continue

It's All Relative

45 degrees and sunny; how does that weather report affect our outdoor plans? Well, that all depends. If it’s the middle or end of summer, we react one way and if it’s towards the end of winter, we behave in yet another way. If we happen to be in Florida or the southwest for a break from the cold New England winter, we have an entirely different reaction. We just can’t seem to make up our minds!

45 degrees late in the summer or even early in the autumn brings out the sweaters and light jackets,… Continue

"The lift lines are short!"

One rainy, foggy early spring day several years ago I overheard a customer at a ski area in the Berkshires ask the mountain ambassador to find something good to say about the day. Without hesitating the ambassador replied, “The lift lines are short.” In spite of his disappointment at the day’s weather and snow conditions, the customer couldn’t help but smile.

That scenario replays in my mind every time we have one of those dreary, foggy, rainy early Spring days on the mountain. The ambassador’s… Continue

Herding Chipmunks

Beginners come in all shapes, sizes, genders and ages, each with their own fascinating body languages and personalities. The one’s I find the most fun to watch are the little ones, kids around the age of six to eight. Think about the last time you saw an elementary school class of kindergarten children or first graders on a springtime outing . The teachers had the kids lined up in pairs to aid in keeping track of them and to hopefully keep anyone from wandering off to explore something more inte… Continue
