A Skier’s View of the Seasons

We all grew up thinking there were four seasons each year , or should I say, everyone living north of the Mason-Dixon Line was raised with that understanding. But a relatively small group of us from the north know the real truth. There are only two season; snow season, which means skiing and riding, and whatever you want to call the remaining months of the year. I prefer to think of them as purgatory.

Sure, softball games, cookouts and the other family get-togethers are great, but considering t… Continue

"Splatter Hearing"

Splatter vision…. A way of seeing things that you normally don’t; don’t see because you have not trained yourself to, not because you can’t. For the most part, we see what is directly in front of us or what we’re looking directly at with no problem, and are only somewhat aware of the things in our periphery. Our peripheral vision picks up some of what’s there but we really don’t see it in detail, if at all. We usually don’t pay any attention to it. Splatter vision takes practice and concentratio… Continue

National Safety Awareness Week, January 17 - 23.

Yesterday was one of those days that you wished would never end. The sun was shining brightly (even though the forecast called for a cloudy day), the temperatures were relatively mild and the snow was simply fabulous. My short trip up the mountain for a quick picture for the daily photo turned into several runs…I just couldn’t make myself go back to the confines of the office and a desk. I stopped frequently on the edge of Blue Ox to take a few shots and then again towards the bottom of the moun… Continue

Loon Double Black Diamond Set to Open

The much anticipated opening of Rip Saw, Loon Mountain Resort's first double black diamond is set for Saturday January 17th. Just under a mile in length and sporting pitches of 70%, this run is guaranteed to take your breath away. It's long, it's steep and it has the traditional New England twists and turns.

No doubt, it is destined to become another in the line of legendary New England trails that expert skiers and riders have to hit. If you're prone to pushing yourself to the limit while othe… Continue

Thanks Loon,
We ride snobikes-Always!
You are by far the most snobike friendly resort in the East.
6 'bikers showed up today for our yearly Meet.
We rode everything---even double black
We learned from each other--style, loading and unloading
Pix--lots of pix!
Questions from boarders and skiers
"is that fun"
"how do you stop"
"where can I rent one"
"how do you get up on the lift"
And we all answer with kindness and enthusiasm....

The sport is growing.
The kids love the tricks and jumps you can do.
The "baby boomers" love the security it give us on the slops.
NO, it's not hard. It's easy and
It keeps me on the snow!

Thanks Loon

Comments: The Gondola is not running today due to the strong winds. More clouds than sun today but still not a bad day to be outside on the snow. All trails, all parks and both half-pipes are open and in nice early Spring shape. We're looking at a mixed bag of precipitation Sunday, with snow possible above 2000 feet. Beautiful weather is projected for the first of the coming week so some real nice late season skiing and riding is just around the corner. 2010-2011 New England Passes are now on sale. Check our web site or stop by any Loon SnowSports desk for information. Have a good one! -Bud
